Bill’s Insulation News – Doing The Sums

28th June 2018

Are you one of those people who keep all your household bills and receipts neatly filed away, know exactly how your weekly or monthly budget is balancing on any given day and switch energy suppliers when you know the rates are better? Or do you just play each day by ear, know direct debits are doing their thing, or top up your pre-payment cards when you remember?

How ever you choose to manage your household budget, there’s one thing which nearly all of us have in common…we’d all like to pay a little less for keeping our home warm, comfortable and healthy to live in.

Hunting around for the best energy deals is definitely a good place to start, because you really can make big savings on your monthly outgoings. But those energy bills could be much lower still if your home was more efficient in how it uses energy – insulating the walls and roof for example, to keep more heat in so you’re only paying for what you’re actually using.

From October 1st, the UK Government is increasing the size of its ‘Affordable Warmth Group’. This means there could be three new key groups of people who can qualify for energy saving support:

1. Those who receive Disability Living Allowance

2. Those who receive Carer’s Allowance

3. And, those who receive benefits from the MOD

And to give you an idea of how much money you could save, here’s a helpful little table from the Energy Saving Trust (homes in England, Scotland and Wales):

We recommend you turn your phone horizontal to view the table

Detached Semi-detached Mid-terrace Bungalow

Cavity Wall Insulation:

savings p/a

£250 £145 £90 £100

Loft Insulation (up to 270mm):

savings p/a

£215 £130 £115 £185 (detached)

A third of a home’s heat is lost through uninsulated walls and a further quarter can be lost through an uninsulated roof – not great if you’re trying to keep on top of your household bills. But, if you receive one of the benefits listed above, you could have these home insulation measures installed for very little cost, or even completely free of charge.

If you’d like to see if you’re eligible for home energy efficiency funding under the new Affordable Warmth Group, call our team on 0800 368 9938.
